Today is the final day of Emmy voting! To achieve the visual language of a natural history documentary, Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age relied on physical, on-set reference puppets engineered by Practic Creations using 3D-printed asset heads from Framestore. Deploying these articulated puppets into remote environments gave camera operators a physical subject to track, allowing them to make real-time, framing and focus decisions just as they would in the wild. When the physical puppets were replaced by CG assets during post-production, the final shots inherited these organic camera reactions, focus shifts, and subtle framing adjustments, anchoring the visual effects in natural history reality. Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age is nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie at the 2026 Creative Arts International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International Emmy Awards), following wins at the Annie Awards and VES Awards. Congratulations to all the nominees: Russell Dodgson, Benjamin Loch, Francois Dumoulin, Romain Rico, Gavin McKenzie, Alvise Avati, Adrien Annesley, Liam Russell, Andy Jones, Rupert Smith, Tracey Gibbons, Brian Fisher. #FYC #Emmys #PrehistoricPlanet #VFX #VisualEffects

Emmy final-round voting closes tomorrow In this featurette, our team and Executive Producer Mike Gunton discuss the importance of puppetry to achieve authentic natural history filmmaking. By deploying articulated puppets into real environments, camera operators could pull focus, frame shots, and react to subtle movements in real time. This physical approach provided the foundational camera language for our animation and VFX teams to build upon, anchoring the final shots in documentary reality. Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age is nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie at the 2026 International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International Emmy Awards), following wins at the Annie and VES Awards. Meet the beast behind the battle. Led by VFX Supervisor Joao Sita, Framestore’s Melbourne and Mumbai teams transformed War Machine’s formidable namesake from digital asset into a fully realised cinematic predator — refining its design, giving it animalistic weight and predatory movement, and developing an atmospheric scanning system that lets it hunt its surroundings. But bringing the beast to life was only part of the challenge. The teams also crafted the environments and effects around it, ensuring every chase, explosion and interaction felt grounded in the same gritty, near-future world. From relentless chases to the climactic quarry showdown, discover the craft behind the creature. Watch the full breakdown here: https://lnkd.in/ecpAZ_j5 #WarMachine #VFX #VFXbreakdown

Staying True to the Genre To capture authentic wildlife behavior, our camera operators needed real-world stimuli on set. In this behind-the-scenes look at Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age, the team details how physical puppetry was used to guide the cinematography. By deploying lightweight, articulated puppets into untouched arctic environments, camera operators could pull focus, frame shots, and react to subtle movements in real time. This physical approach provided the foundational camera language for our animation and VFX teams to build upon. Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age is nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie at the 2026 International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International Emmy Awards). This nomination follows our global team earning Best FX at the Annie Awards, alongside double honors at the VES Awards for Outstanding Visual Effects and Outstanding Effects Simulation. Congratulations to our nominees: Russell Dodgson, Benjamin Loch, Francois Dumoulin, Romain Rico, Gavin McKenzie, Alvise Avati, Adrien Annesley, and Liam Russell.
